SONIC YOUTH BOOTLEGS / COVERS

When cio and I weren't dating yet, I was going through a huge Sonic Youth rare tracks binge, he impressed me by sending me some live bootlegs and a homemade covers compilation. You have to love the boy after that. Credit for this post goes to him.

I'm sharing the covers compilation with you guys now, since these are probably harder to find than live SY bootlegs. These are all hosted under my server so be polite and do not hotlink.

SONIC YOUTH - HALLOWED BE THY NAME
Originally by Alice Cooper ("Hallowed Be My Name"). Not my favorite cover of theirs but then again this was back in '85.

SONIC YOUTH - PERSONALITY CRISIS
New York Dolls cover. Blah blah blah, I don't like the New York Dolls (but sure, it's an interesting cover). This was performed/recorded '91 apparently.

SONIC YOUTH - I AM RIGHT
Originally by Saccharine Trust.

SONIC YOUTH - COMPUTER AGE
Neil Young. Liked this better than Neil Young's original, although I'm not a big Neil Young fan. Hah, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get hated on now for saying that.

SONIC YOUTH - WITHIN YOU, WITHOUT YOU
Ok, now we're talking. I don't really have to tell y'all who did this one first. Personally, they're probably the most covered band in the world (or maybe Nirvana is?), but yeah, this is golden. I'd even go so far as say I like it as much as I like the original. It was done for the 1988 NME compilation called "Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father". I haven't been all that active lately with the posting but back when I was, I musta posted this song at least thrice already in different week themes so some of you should be familiar with it. If not, DOWNLOAD IT!

SONIC YOUTH - EUROPEAN SON
Originally by the Velvet Underground.

SONIC YOUTH - BURNING FARM
Originally by Shonen Knife. Recorded around '88/'89.

SONIC YOUTH - ELECTRICITY
Originally by Captain Beefheart. See? How can you go wrong with Sonic Youth when they go around covering Capt. Beefheart (well, I guess they cover Nirvana too, but whatever)? Lee Ranaldo sings in this one, once again proving that he's got the best taste of all of them.

SONIC YOUTH - IS IT MY BODY
By Alice Cooper. Recorded in '91 on a tour with Neil Young.

SONIC YOUTH - SITTING ON A BARBED WIRE FENCE
Originally by Bob Dylan.

SONIC YOUTH - MAMA YOU'VE BEEN ON MY MIND
Bob Dylan (thanks for clarifying that). Thing is, I'm not sure this is by SY at all. I'm just posting it since it's on the compilation. It doesn't sound like SY though. If anyone has information on this, I'd love to know.

SONIC YOUTH - BLACK CANDY
Can someone tell me who does this originally? I tried looking this up on the SY site but there doesn't seem to be any record of it anywhere. Ok, apparently this is originally by Beat Happening. Thanks to metatherian for clarifying that.

SONIC YOUTH - I KNOW THERE'S AN ANSWER
Orginally by The Beach Boys.

SONIC YOUTH - CA PLANE POUR MOI
Originally by Plastic Bertrand. This is hilarious/appalling. Listen to Thurston make up French words and babble on this one.

SONIC YOUTH - TOUCH ME, I'M SICK
Originally performed by Mudhoney. This was featured on a split single with Mudhoney, who covered Sonic Youth's "Halloween". Cute.

SONIC YOUTH - THAT'S ALL I KNOW (RIGHT NOW)
Original is by a Tom Verlain early project called Neon Boys.

SONIC YOUTH - SUPERSTAR
Originally by The Carpenters. Well, we all know this song. For those of you who don't, SY has had a long obsession over Karen Carpenter's death. This was done for a Carpenters tribute album called If I Were A Carpenter (which a lot of people hated). It's a nice cover though. Very tender. Even more tender than the original.

SONIC YOUTH - SANTA DOESN'T COP OUT ON DOPE
Martin Mull original. Done for a Christmas compilation called Just Say Noel.

SONIC YOUTH - MOIST VAGINA
Nirvana. Listen to Kim make up lyrics.

SONIC YOUTH - SIMPSON'S THEME
Yes, Danny Elfman. They did this in '96 when they guested in the show. See: my mood icon.
