My internet connection was down most of the week, and it was killing me to see all these cool covers posted when I was either at work where I can't download or home on dialup and unable to download everything I wanted because it just takes too long and I have no patience. It finally got fixed last evening, and I went on a downloading binge. :D Then I uploaded stuff. More stuff than I'm going to post right now, because I decided to stick to just one theme within a theme.
Jeff Buckley is/was my favorite singer ever. He did a lot of covers, especially when he was first starting out and didn't have many songs of his own. In fact, he's probably known more for his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" than for anything else. (Everyone already has his version of "Hallelujah", yes? And his gorgeous version of "Lilac Wine?" Because if you don't, let me know and I shall rectify the situation ASAP. :p) Here are some of his less famous cover songs.
First, a few Bob Dylan covers. I love Bob Dylan, although I think his talents are better put to use as a songwriter than as a singer. (If you doubt me, find his version of "Hallelujah." :D)
Farewell Angelina
I Shall Be Released
Mama, You Been on My Mind
If You See Her Say Hello
This is a cover of a Van Morrison song, and one of my favorite things ever. This recording is from the Live at the Bataclan EP, and the enthusiastic audience just adds something to it.
The Way Young Lovers Do
Here's a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight." There's a version of this on the "Live at Sin-e" cd, but this one comes from a studio session. (You can hear the recording engineer or someone at the end asking who originally did the song.)
Night Flight
This one is really different. It's a cover of Pakistani singer (I'm so going to get this wrong and I'm at work without anything to refer to.) Nusrat Ali Kahn, who a friend of Jeff's referred to as her "Elvis." I have no idea if he even gets the words or anything right, but it's really cool to listen to.
Yeh Jo Halka Saroor Hai
And, finally, a cover of a Tim Buckley song. I ♥ Tim Buckley; he was an amazing songwriter and it's pretty clear where Jeff got his beautiful voice. In the early '90s, there was a tribute to Tim in which Jeff did a few of his father's songs. This one differs so much from the original1 that it's almost an entirely different song.
Phantasmagoria in Two
(Though this is far from the worst quality Buckley bootleg I've got, I would kill for a better recording of this, but one takes what one can get when one's favorite singer sings no more. :()
1The original, in case you don't know it. It's a really beautiful song.

And I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never heard Jeff Buckley's version of "Halleluiah", though everyone does seem to regard it as the definitive version. Could I maybe bug you for a copy of it?

Didn't his father also die tragically young?

I saw Jeff in concert at the Olympia (yikes, it's 10 years ago) and it remains one of those that can't be erased.
